Windows 8 To Launch In 2012?

Windows 7 isn’t out the door yet, but Microsoft seem to be making good progress with Windows 8.  A roadmap slide from Microsoft’s Italian subsidiary has Windows 8 penciled in for a 2012 release:

Note though that Windows 8 is down as approximately 2012.  Even still, it looks like Microsoft are sticking to their 2.5-3 year release cycle, with Windows Vista launching Jan 2007 (it was late), Windows 7 in October 2009 and Windows 8 in 2012.

Windows 8 is also denoted as ‘codemane Windows 8′ – does this mean that ‘Windows 8‘ will not be called Windows 8?

I’m expecting big things from Windows 8.  Although Windows 7 is a great release and adds several much needed improvements to Windows Vista, it’s still too familiar for me and doesn’t feel ‘new’ enough and I’m looking forward to getting a new OS to get my teeth into!

Hey- since you want a new and fresh OS to sink your teeth into, why not try Linux? It's got some great innovations that are constantly coming in that you could try out and become familiar with, since it's already a big player in the market.

I would highly suggest running it on a USB drive or even dual-booting if you have enough space and are up to the task. :3 Why not get the best of both worlds?

Xbox was also meant to be a codename, but Microsoft've adopted it for real.

for windows 8 to look fresh, they gotta wait for a fresh apple OS (after SL) to grab every fresh idea they can.
  • Name
    not necessarily true.

mac OSX (with it's new features and everything) came after the Windows Longhorn concept was brought out by Microsoft around after a year. When the concept came out with gadgets, docks, WinFS, animations, and everything, guess what came out of the Apple's new UNIX Darwin-based OS? yep.

and who cares about what comes out first, they all give out ideas to each other. Fuji's dSLR, Sony's Face Recognition for handheld cameras, Creative's flash-based MP3 player, Adobe's PageMaker (now succeeded by InDesign) and Photoshop, Apple's GUI, Microsoft's Surface (and other stuff,) Nikon's Video recording for dSLRs, Canon's diffractive optics, Nintendo's game controller, etc etc etc.

Now stop believing everything that Apple's marketing is showing to you like that recent "Start your photocopiers" crap when they used a similar design to Vista for their Leopard release that was as big as Vista AFTER Vista came out. Not to mention bug and security fixes that came out for OSX most of the time comes after a similar patch was released for the windows operating system.

Windows 7 was code named "Windows 7" so Windows 8 could reasonably be code named "Windows 8"
