Windows 8′s Known Knowns

View Comments October 22, 2009 | Everton

Long after Donald Rumsfeld has died, he will be known (sic) for one of the worst quotes ever:

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

Now although information about Windows 8 will eventually become available, rather than the lack of information to this day about WMDs, Windows 8 details still remain sketchy.  Here are Windows 8′s Known Knowns:

  1. It will be called Windows 8 and there’s even a Windows 9 in the pipeline
  2. It will be released no earlier than 2012 – it is unlikely it will be released in 2011
  3. It will have new networking features
  4. It will include 128 bit support and will see the end of 32 bit Operating Systems
  5. It won’t be Microsoft’s last client based OS - Steve Ballmer says that won’t happen for 10-20 years.

Hopefully soon we will unravel Windows 8′s known unknowns and unknown unknowns!

And then there are known knowns that we know; and known knowns that we forgot we knew; and there are unknown unknowns that we don't know; and unknown unknowns that we don't want to know; and unknown unknowns that we would like to know if we knew what they were about and they were good. I know, I know; enough already.

It's the unknown knowns that Rumsfeld failed to address. Things that we know, but we don't know we know. Sometimes we just don't realize that we know certain things until they come up. Also the older we get, the more unknown knowns we have, because we forget what the hell we ever knew in the first place, and so we don't even know we know them any more. So they are added to the list of unknown knowns. And then when these things come up, we suddenly know that we already know them. Then they become known knowns all over again. You know?
