The memo, obtained by GeekWire, was sent by Microsoft EVP of Worldwide Commercial Business Judson Althoff; EVP of Global Sales, Marketing & Operations Jean-Philippe Courtois; and CMO and EVP of Marketing and Consumer Business Chris Capossela to their respective teams.
The company unveiled the steps in an email to staff Monday that was obtained by Bloomberg.
Microsoft representatives declined to comment about job losses related to the reorganization. Since the appointment of Nadella, the former head of Microsoft'scloud division, the company has put more and more resources toward building out its Azure cloud computing platform and selling software subscriptions to businesses.
For a long time, Microsoft has trained its sales force to convince customers to buy software for their desktops and servers. Althoff previously criticized Microsoft's earlier sales strategies and plans to focus more on Azure going forward. The three units titled Enterprise Operating Unit, Enterprise Services and Commercial Software Engineering teams and Commercial Software Engineering will all work closely with counterparts Marketing and Operations and the technical core group to offer sales and support for all business types. This followed announcements made by the company to cut 1850 jobs due to the failure of its smartphone unit and then another 1350 jobs due to the cutting of its Finnish mobile unit in July 2016. With that being said, we're sure to hear more about Microsoft's shuffling of departments and employees in the coming days.
