Suspects in the downing of flight MH17 will be prosecuted in the Netherlands, the Dutch foreign minister says.

The Dutch government on Wednesday said a European Joint Investigation Team (JIT) decided suspects should be prosecuted in the Netherlands, "a process that will be rooted in ongoing global cooperation and support". "Ukraine will help the Netherlands by all means to speed up bringing those responsible to justice", the President noted.

MH17 was blown out of the sky July 17, 2014 on a routine commercial flight from Amsterdam to Kuala-Lampur, killing all 298 civilians on board.

"The JIT countries have now decided that the suspects should be prosecuted in the Netherlands, a process that will be rooted in ongoing global co-operation and support", said Dutch foreign minister Bert Koenders. The victims came from 17 countries but most - 196 people - were citizens of the Netherlands.

"What's more, the ongoing criminal investigation enjoys virtually unanimous support from the global community".

So far only two Russian-speaking men, named, but not verified, as Andrey Ivanovich, also known as "Orion", and Nikolay Fiodorovich, using the pseudonym "Delfin", have been identified as possible suspects.

The criminal investigation is still ongoing and it's unknown when the trial will start.
