MDA spokesman Chris Johnson said the THAAD weapon system at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska, would "detect, track and engage a target with a THAAD interceptor".

Analysts from a research firm called Eurasia Group reportedly claims that U.S. President Donald Trump will possibly put more pressure on North Korea's Kim Jong Un to stop its nuclear program after the latter reportedly launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile on Tuesday, July 4. The ground based system is created to shoot down short, medium and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

Some experts have said that the nuclear-capable missile North Korea just tested, the Hwasong-14, can reach Alaska.
