  • WATCH: Bethanie Mattek-Sands screams for help after horrific Wimbledon injury

The 32-year-old's knee appeared to buckle underneath her during her second-round match with Romanian Sorana Cirstea on Court 17.

Cirstea approached her, then looked shocked as Mattek-Sands continued to cry out in pain as everybody around the court initially seemed stunned.

She was left screaming in pain: "Please, help me, please, please" in scenes so distressing that TV cameras panned away from the stricken star.

Cristea later questioned the length of time it took for Mattek-Sands to be put on a stretcher and taken off Court 17 and to hospital for surgery.

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) said on Friday morning: "Bethanie is now undergoing more scans this morning and we should know more within the next few hours".

Wimbledon has never seen anything like this!

"I remember all these thoughts going through my mind about rehab and my chance at Wimbledon, doubles with Lucie [Safarova]", Mattek-Sands said in a recent Facebook live video.

Messages of support poured in for Mattek-Sands, well known on the tour for her flamboyant fashion sense and friendly, easy-going nature. I spoke with my physio afterwards, if he knows a little bit more.

She immediately clutched her knee and, down on the turf, wailed loudly, imploring for someone to "Help me!"

Mattek-Sands also dislocated her patella in her fall, saying that she heard a "pop" in her leg as she stepped towards the net. "No-one was having any reaction", she said.

When the incident happened the medical team took some time to arrive but once they reached she was treated on the field.

And the world number 99 was full of praise for opponent Sorana Cirstea. I'm not sure how the other courts are, if they're damaged that much as Court 18. I don't know, there are sports where you see something's happening, you see straightaway the help. "And I said, eff you, I already did".

Mattek-Sands will fly back to NY today and informed fans that she will be needing surgery, which will leave her out for a while.

"The player was kept on court while pain relief was given".
