  • North Korea may have the technology to strike Alaska. Here’s how Alaska feels about that

It will test its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system against a intermediate-range missile.

North Korea demonstrated its ability to reach the continental USA with a nuclear-capable ballistic missile on July 4, but close analysis of launch footage may point to another unsafe technological development. The THAAD interceptors will be fired from Alaska when the test takes place. China registered their anger over THAAD implementation as it would had led to a weakening of their own ballistic missile system.

The officials, on the condition of anonymity, released the nature and test timing of the THAAD.

Steel Tariffs To Play Major Role At G20 Summit
On the sidelines of the G-20 Summit, Trump is scheduled to meet for the first time his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Now, the EU-Japan pact underscores the economic risks for the United States if it's bypassed in global economic pacts.

Gov. Bill Walker has said North Korea's missile provocations mean there is a need to "expand armed forces" in Alaska, and to add a strategic Arctic port.

MDA said THAAD had a 100 percent successful track record in its 13 flight tests since 2006.

Lockheed Martin Corp, the prime contractor for the THAAD system, said it has the ability to intercept incoming missiles both inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere. "It showed that North Korea does not want to be part of a peaceful world", US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said at an emergency Security Council meeting following the launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile by North Korea. Another consideration is South Korea's new president Moon Jae-in has been critical of THAAD's deployment on his soil as well as America's overall role in resolving the nuclear weapons conflict with Pyongyang, as I have written before. This year's USA deployment of THAAD in South Korea to guard against North Korea's shorter-range missiles has also drawn fierce criticism from China, which says the system's powerful radar can probe deep into its territory.

U.S. will test THAAD system in Alaska
China and Russian Federation opposed THAAD's deployment in Korea, saying it would destabilize the power balance in the region. Some experts have said that the nuclear-capable missile North Korea just tested, the Hwasong-14, can reach Alaska.

The latest success showed once again how far the system has progressed.

India urged North Korea from refraining from such action. This could make it harder and more expensive for North Korea to continue their nuclear missile tests in the future.
