  • Iraqi commander says 300 ISIS fighters holed up in Mosul

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has been celebrating with Iraqi troops in Mosul after they drove Islamic State militants from some of their last strongholds in a almost nine-month campaign.

Haider al-Abadi was quoted as saying he "congratulates the fighters and the people on the big victory" in the key city.

Since October 2016, the Iraqi troops were assisted by the US Air Force, as it led the air strikes to neutralise the scores of ISIS militants.

Security sources said earlier Sunday that Iraqi troops are now fighting to drive terrorists from the last meters they control in the Old City in Mosul's western part.

Writing on Thursday, she said the battle for the centre of Mosul was turning into the deadliest of the eight-month campaign to retake Iraq's second largest city.

Aaron Judge surpasses Joe DiMaggio's Yankees single-season rookie home run record
Judge is hitting.331 with 65 RBIs and 104 strikeouts. "That's a pretty special name he passed", Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. It took DiMaggio 128 games to reach 29 homers in his rookie season, but Judge eclipsed it in his 82nd game this year.

The declared victory in Mosul marks an epic milestone for the Iraqi security forces, who had crumbled in the face of a Daish onslaught across Iraq in 2014. Thousands of civilians have been killed.

Without Mosul - by far the largest city to fall under militant control - Islamic State's dominion in Iraq will be reduced to mainly rural, desert areas west and south of the city where tens of thousands of people live.

But they have been losing ground over the past nine months, as government forces advance on their former Iraqi stronghold.

According to the official, dozens of snipers have been deployed by the Iraqi Army along the Tigris River in an effort to abort any Daesh attempt to attack Mosul's eastern side.

The extremists still hold several smaller towns and villages across Iraq and Syria.

After the withdraw of American troops under President Barack Obama, the terrorist army known as ISIS arose and seized much of #Northern Iraq, including Mosul, along with territory in nearby Syria, and declared a caliphate.

March 12, 2017- A United States envoy said Iraqi troops had cut all roads into western Mosul, trapping remaining Daesh militants inside.

The prime minister has congratulated Iraqi armed forces on the victory against Daesh terrorists, the Rudaw news agency reported.
