China said Monday the United States apologised after Beijing officially protested a White House statement that mistakenly described Xi Jinping as the president of the "Republic of China". Communist China, led by Xi, is called the People's Republic of China.
Trump hailed his "wonderful relationship" with Xi and expressed confidence in "success" in addressing common problems, together with China, according to the White House.
In early December, Trump, as president-elect, first stoked controversy over the country by taking a congratulatory phone call from its president, Tsai Ing-wen.
"The US said sorry for the technical error and they made the correction", he said when asked about the faux pas by Washington. Though Trump defended the call at the time, he later told Xi he would honor the "one China" policy and not recognize Taiwan's status as a sovereign nation.
Renmin University global relations expert Shi Yinhong said Monday the gaffe is indicative of how the White House operates under Trump and is not conducive to China-U.S. relations.
"It will only make the Chinese people look down upon the American government for it to make such a low-level mistake".
"Differences emerge endlessly", Xi reported said.
Wang Dong, an associate professor in the school of worldwide studies at elite Peking University, said he believes the error was not intentional but still reveals a lack of capacity in Trump's foreign policy team while key positions remain unfilled.
The White House did not immediately comment on the diplomatic blunder.
The mistake occurred in the introduction to the statement and was not in the actual text.
The Republic of China is the official name of Taiwan. The correct anthem was used.
Trump first ruffled feathers in Beijing after his November election victory, when the president-elect accepted a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, despite the USA having broken off relations with the island in 1979.
Then last month, the U.S. administration further provoked the ire of Beijing when it approved $1.3 billion worth of arms sales to the self-ruling island.
Nearly six months into office, Trump has yet to fill thousands of government positions.
Trump has come under fire for failing to fill thousands of slots in his administration, with his White House staff, in particular, being faulted for poor organizational skills.
