  • Cousins Not Interested in Long-Term Deal Now

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins didn't sign a long-term deal with the team on Monday, ahead of the franchise-player deadline.

Cousins will become the first quarterback in the National Football League history to play back-to-back seasons under the franchise tag according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The 49ers not only will have an abundance of salary-cap space next season, they'll have a lot of draft picks after adding an extra second- and third-round pick for 2018 in this year's draft. If they can not, the negotiation window doesn't open again until after the coming season.

The team could give Cousins the franchise tag once again, but this time it would come with a 44 percent raise over his salary this year, meaning he would earn $34.56 million next year. "While we would have liked to work out a long-term contract before the season, we accept his decision".

That will include an offer of training from ADF special forces units such as the SAS, which is based in Swanbourne. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Defence Minister Marise Payne will announce the changes on Monday.

By the way, new 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has a great relationship with Cousins from when they were together in Washington for two seasons and believes Cousins is a great fit for his offensive system. That will pay him $23.94 million and Redskins president Bruce Allen used the moment to share the team's take on how negotiations played out. The price for even middling passers goes up and up, and Washington is all-too-familiar with the uncertainty of counting on even a top quarterback in the draft. The transition tag would be less costly, at $28.73 million for a one-year deal. If they use the transition tag and fail to match another team's offer, they'd lose Cousins without compensation. If Cousins does indeed end up playing the upcoming season under the franchise tag, he'll likely test the open free agent market in the 2018 offseason.

The 49ers and new coach Kyle Shanahan, of course, have always been linked to Cousins given their history in Washington, and San Francisco also has a glaring need for a long-term fix at quarterback.

BC wildfire crews prepare for windy weekend
Controlled burns allow for the fuel to burn in a controlled setting before fires potentially move to the areas, due to wind. That's down from the more than 200 that were burning last weekend, but the weather forecast means more could be coming.

Sources say that talks between both sides have been positive recently, but Cousins wants to wait until after the season to talk. The Niners need a quarterback and Shanahan's system would create a situation for Cousins in which he seemingly could thrive. But there are plenty of quarterback-needy teams and not enough good quarterbacks to go around. He could get hurt this season. If he plays this season under the tag, he will be paid $12.1 million. But even if that happens, Cousins will still make his money.
