  • Germany EU aid to Turkey could be halted over arrests

Following the failed attempt to overthrow the government, Turkey has cracked down on people suspected of being affiliated with US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, accused of being behind the failed coup. "We have no other choice - as we are responsible for the safety of our country's citizens - but to adapt our travel and safety advice to Turkey and let Germans know what can happen to them when they travel [there]". Four detainees were released on Tuesday morning, while the other six were jailed ahead of a trial under suspicion of aiding an armed terror group.

He argued that the allegations against the detained German citizens were "unjust", and demanded their release. "The situation around (human rights activist Peter) Steudtner shows that German citizens in Turkey can not be protected from arbitrary detention", he stressed. The German government said their goal was to carry out propaganda in Germany and banned them from holding these events, sparking criticism in Ankara, which accused Berlin of using "Nazi methods" against Turks.

The accusations of terrorist activity are "clearly far-fetched", Schaefer said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly said the rights activists now arrested were involved in a meeting that had the "nature of a continuation" of the coup attempt.

Ibrahim Kalin told reporters Thursday that the German comments were "internal political investments" geared toward increasing votes at upcoming elections in the country, and urged German politicians to act in a more "rational manner".

Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel complained Thursday that dozens of German companies are being accused without evidence of helping terrorists.

"I therefore cannot see how we, as the government, can still guarantee corporate investments in Turkey when we are seeing arbitrary, politically-motivated confiscations [of property] there and arbitrary deportations for political reasons", he underlined. Such guarantees are offered to insure exports to many countries. It said Turkey was Germany's No. 15 export destination and No. 16 source of imports previous year. Accusing Turkey of "departing the basis of European values", the top diplomat also vowed economic retaliation.

Turkey has accused Germany of interfering with the country's efforts to bring terrorists to justice after Berlin condemned Ankara's decision to arrest six human rights activists.

His ministry issued a travel guidance, telling travelers "Foreign ministry sites are not always informed in a timely manner about the detention of German citizens, and access for consular services is not always ensured".
