The police have arrested Congress leader and Kovalam MLA M Vincent on charges of sexual abuse after probing a complaint filed by the husband of a woman, who tried committing suicide. On Saturday, he filed an anticipatory bail plea before the court but the court set aside his petition for hearing on Monday. Her husband also alleged that Vincent used to call her repeatedly over the phone and harass her.

Senior women leaders in the Congress party M Bindu Krishna and Shanimol Usman have asked Vincent to step down as legislator and face the probe. Vincent, a first-time legislator, represents Kovalam in the state Assembly.

Vincent has also been booked under abetment of suicide.

Vincent, 49, was on Friday slapped with rape (IPC 376) and stalking (IPC 354 D) charges. The 51-year-old woman allegedly attempted suicide by taking an overdose of pills and is now admitted to a private hospital in Neyyatinkara.

The police team will now meet up with Kollam Superintendent of Police S. Ajeetha Begum, who heads the probe team.
