Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau stepped down from his resigned on Friday, after last week's fatal shooting of an Australian woman by a Minnesota police officer.

While Hodges was reading her prepared statement, a protester in the back of the room yelled "your department has terrorized us enough" and called for Hodges to also step down.

Minneapolis Police chief Janee Harteau had faced criticism over her handling of the killing of Justine Damond last Saturday night, which ignited an global outcry.

According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Mr Harrity told investigators that Ms Damond approached the police vehicle immediately after he was startled by a loud noise and that Mr Noor, who was in the passenger seat, fired his weapon through the open driver's side window, striking Ms Damond.

Damond, an Australian woman who had been living in Minneapolis since 2014, was shot and killed last Saturday after she called 911 to report a possible rape.

An incident report released Wednesday showed that at 11:41 p.m., the officers reported a shooting incident and began performing CPR.

"We ask you for your prompt resignation". "Our hearts are broken and we are utterly devastated by the loss of Justine", he said. Harteau was the first female or openly gay chief for the city. But investigators located and interviewed a witness they had been seeking, the BCA said. They were startled by a loud noise and then Ruszczyk approached the driver's side of the vehicle and Noor, who was on the passenger side, fired his gun through the open driver's side window, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Noor and his partner Harrity have both been placed on administrative leave.

Bob Kroll, president of the Police Officers Federation, applauded Harteau's resignation and the appointment of Arrando, and said Hodges should step down, too.

"The individual has been cooperative and provided an interview today", the BCA statement said, adding the shooter, police officer Mohamed Noor, had declined an interview.

Harteau is ending a long career with the Minneapolis police.

Harteau said in a press conference Thursday that Damond's death was "unnecessary" and that the Sydney native "didn't have to die".
