  • Apple complies with China's request to remove VPN apps from the Chinese App Store

Apple has taken down virtual network providers, or VPNs, from its App Store in China, succumbing to the government's pressure to maintain the internet censorship in the country.

As Reuters reported, the Great Firewall, China's internet censorship apparatus, had been upgraded with new capabilities that include VPN services getting hit by the most sophisticated attacks from China to date, messaging apps getting interfered by the government and so on. It was told that those VPNs that are approved would only use government infrastructure.

The government has ordered the shutdown of dozens of Chinese VPN providers, and has extended the crackdown to providers based overseas ahead of the Communist Party congress in August.

ExpressVPN wrote in a blog post that Apple explained that its products violated Chinese law, and said that they found that "all major VPN apps for iOS ave been removed" from the store.

Meet John F. Kelly, Donald Trump's new White House chief of staff
US President Donald Trump has taken a gamble in installing the politically inexperienced John Kelly as his chief of staff. But he decided on Kelly because he was impressed by the job he had done leading DHS and trusted him not to leak.

ExpressVPN said that it was disappointed to see Apple "aiding China's censorship agents", and condemned the removals.

According to the New York Times, at least three companies, ExpressVPN, Star VPN, and VyprVPN, had their applications removed by Apple.

"We view access to Internet in China as a human rights issue, and I would expect Apple to value human rights over profits", he said.

Yokubaitis said Golden Frog will file an appeal to Apple over the ban.

ExpressVPN reminded Chinese users that they could access App Stores outside of China by listing a foreign billing address, and that their apps for Windows, Android, and - intriguingly - Mac operating systems remained available. Multiple apps belonging to the New York Times were removed from the store last December.

China is Apple's largest market outside the United States.

Apple is also planning to establish new data centers with a local partner in the southwestern province of Guizhou. China is requiring its big three phone carriers to block access to VPNs by February 2018 in a campaign aimed at "cleaning and standardizing" access to the internet.

VPN providers are now required to have approval from Beijing before they can provide their services to users in the country.

He also cited McKee's previous research, stating that she and her colleagues had diagnosed many players who died with the disease. The study is limited by factors such as its selection bias and lack of a control group, the researchers write.
