John Kelly, the new White House chief of staff, is a retired four-star Marine general who served in the military for over four decades.

"Allies to Priebus said he told them he had resigned because the internal chaos had become 'unsustainable, ' and that he felt demeaned by the president's treatment of him", said the report.

Priebus and Scaramucci flew together on Air Force One to the NY event, but the White House press pool reported they didn't see the communications director on the plane for the return trip.

Announcing the switch via Twitter, Trump called retired Marine Corps general Kelly a "great American".

People close to Trump had largely blamed the chief of staff for the White House's troubles in Congress, where the president has yet to secure a major legislative victory.

He described Kelly as a "Great American and a Great Leader" who has done a "spectacular job" in his six months as Homeland Security head.

Instead, Priebus opened the doors and arguably did more than anyone else in the party to embrace the coming force. CNN reported that Priebus resigned on Thursday, which has been confirmed by other major news outlets.

Kelly, 67, a retired four-star Marine Corps general, is now secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and will assume the chief of staff post on Monday. "He has been a true star of my Administration", Trump tweeted.

Just hours earlier, the president had heaped praise on Kelly at an event in Long Island talking about the battle against the violent MS-13 gang.

The move likely signals a greater focus on law and order issues and will put further strain on relations between Trump and the Republican establishment. "I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country". Trump said in a tweet.

Kelly, 67, is a retired four star general of the Marine Corps and was tapped to lead the Department of Homeland Security on January 20.

Priebus and Spicer had told the president they believed Scaramucci, a gregarious hedge fund manager and fund-raiser, lacked the political experience and organizational skills required to serve in the role of communications director.

President Donald Trump says the aide he's replacing as chief of staff, Reince Priebus, is a "good man".

The Post cites two sources in reporting that Trump first offered the job to Kelly in mid-May, but kept on Priebus when Kelly declined.

He was hired with the goal of bringing more discipline to the White House, a senior White House official said. "I will continue to serve as a strong supporter of the President's agenda and policies", he said.

"I think this is a good appointment for the White House and I think the general will do a great job", he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room." . But he decided on Kelly because he was impressed by the job he had done leading DHS and trusted him not to leak.

US President Donald Trump has taken a gamble in installing the politically inexperienced John Kelly as his chief of staff.

Yet the prospects for tax reform remain distant, with serious questions over the White House's ability to marshall Republican politicians towards a consensus.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC, a frequent Trump critic, welcomed Kelly as "one of the strongest and most natural leaders I've ever known".
