President Donald Trump drove out his chief of staff on Friday, replacing Reince Priebus with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly in an explosive move that ends a turbulent six-month tenure.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) posted to Twitter on Friday that the hiring of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to the position signals a "militarizing of the White House, ' adding that the president is putting an 'extremist" at the helm of the administration. He's a great great American. "He has been a true star of my Administration", Trump wrote.

On Thursday, Mr Spicer's replacement in the White House briefing room, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, would not say whether Mr Priebus still have the confidence of the President.

"And, you know, the President was great", said Priebus.

"I think the president wanted to go a different direction", Priebus said. According to an anonymous advisor who spoke to the president about the New Yorker interview (which he reportedly enjoyed), Trump was "dismissive" of Priebus "for not returning fire" against Scaramucci in a public forum, or privately through an approved press leak. He also accused Mr Priebus of being behind the flow of damaging leaks about the White House and said he was going to ask the FBI to investigate him.

He also saluted Mr Priebus, the chief of staff he had just pushed out, saying: "I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country. I could not be more proud to call Reince a dear friend".

US Senate vote for new sanctions on Russian Federation
They fear the new sanctions could hinder key energy projects in Europe and further inflame internal European Union divisions. If he opts for a veto, the bill can become law anyway if two-thirds of both the House and Senate vote for an override.

Priebus had worked against Scaramucci joining the administration when the NY hedge fund manager was first considered for an administration post and while the two attempted to put on a show of unity in Scaramucci's first days at the White House, it quickly became clear the two men would continue to be at odds with each other. I think it's time to hit the reset button.

Still, while Priebus is playing the role of theWH chief staff, he is viewed as weak and not effective.

Kelly, a retired Marine general, has been serving as Homeland Security secretary.

While some advisers have questioned the wisdom of the move, the president has got himself a bona fide retired four-star US Marine Corps general in the shape of John F Kelly.

Mr Priebus, the former Republican National Committee chief, had been a frequent target of rumours about his job security amid infighting and confusion within the White House and a long whispering campaign by Trump allies.

Priebus made a decision to go on CNN for his first interview hours after Trump announced he was being replaced.

So when you drive 110 per cent the auto is more on a knife edge and you are just taking it into places it doesn't want to go. It really should be an interesting and exciting race to watch before we take our helmets off for a four-week break.

"We don't want you involved in our election policies, " Kelly said, recounting a now-common refrain from state officials.

In January 2017, Kelly was confirmed as DHS secretary by a landslide vote of 88 to 11 on President Trump's first day in office.

"I would just from that one interview but keep in mind I'm from Alabama", Brooks said. When Trump returned to Washington, he told reporters that John Kelly "will do a fantastic job" and is "respected by everybody".

The supporters also said that Preibus had been given "an impossible job of managing a president who chafed at attempts to control his more rash impulses".

Speaking earlier in New York, Trump offered effusive praise for Kelly, though he didn't hint he would soon be working from the West Wing.
