  • Late French actress Jeanne Moreau

Jeanne received a string of awards throughout her successful career, including the Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 1960 for her role in "Seven Days". She followed that role with starring turns in films like Roger Vadim's Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1959), Michelangelo Antonioni's La Notte (1961), and François Truffaut's Jules And Jim (1962), the first of several collaborations between Truffaut and Moreau and one of the great classics of the French New Wave.

Actress Jeanne Moreau, an icon of French New Wave cinema who went on to become an global film star, has died in Paris, according to AFP.

She continued to work up until only a few years ago, and apparently never felt nostalgic for her heydeys of the French New Wave, instead insisting on always trying new things.

Jeanne Moreau, shown here at the 1995 Cesars with Gregory Peck and Steven Spielberg, has died at 89. It's moody, somber and unforgiving, with one of Moreau's most nuanced performances and an equally riveting turn by Mastroianni. "I am usually a very calm person, but I was trembling".

She had a busy career before Jules et Jim pushed her towards an elevated level of celebrity.

Orson Welles once called her "the greatest actress in the world". The actress, who was presumably reminded of her past work in countless interviews and fan interactions, took a rather hard stance on nostalgia of any kind in her later years.

The "Chimes at Midnight" actress is survived by her son, Jerome Richard.

The highlight of our working relationship was a trip to attend her film's screening at the San Francisco Film Festival. His movies, his voice, his talent had made her a essential personality of the French cinema of the past sixty years. In 1997, she directed a third film, Solstice.

Macron, the French president, said in a statement on Monday: "We could say about Jeanne Moreau that a part of cinema legend is gone". "Sorry, Jeanne, is stronger than us: we cry". Her philosophy, she once told me, was "Don't run away from fame, use it". In Elevator to the Gallows, Moreau plays femme fatale Florence, a deceitful wife complicit in the murder of her husband - her intention is to run off with her lover, Julien (Maurice Ronet). "And that she made us love".

A lot of girls do'. "I think when you add blonde hair and fake tits to that, it riles people up", she continued. She admitted: 'He has changed me in that he's brought out a side of me that hasn't been there for a while'.

But here she was, "Madame Friedkin", as someone rather derisively referred to her, occupying a sprawling home just above UCLA in Bel-Air and, as I learned over numerous lunches at a small, entirely untrendy Japanese place (no longer there) on Sawtelle that was a favorite of hers, writing her autobiography.
