Microsoft pulls Word Flow keyboard for iOS, directing users to SwiftKey

The software giant has pulled Word Flow from the App Store, telling users to give its other, better-known keyboard a try.

It's been a well-known secret since iOS 9 that one of the best iPhone keyboards is made by one of Apple's oldest competitors. Word Flow combined predictive capabilities, also found on SwiftKey, one-handed mode, custom backgrounds and search functions for things like GIFs and restaurants.

Microsoft is abandoning its Word Flow app after it bought the company behind the SwiftKey in February 2016 for an undisclosed price. There were plans to "integrate SwiftKey technology with our Guinness World Record Word Flow technology for Windows" but ended up bringing Word Flow features into SwiftKey instead. The SwiftKey product team is frequently building and evaluating new features for SwiftKey and shipping updates.

SwiftKey itself has been downloaded over 100 million times in the Play Store and possibly around the same for the Apple app store though numbers of how many installs don't show.

Microsoft classified Word Flow as a Garage project, which means it was always an experiment of sorts.

It's unclear how many people had downloaded the Word Flow iOS app, but it's likely to have been a small number compared to SwiftKey. And it's free to install, both on iOS and Android. Either way though, it's sad to see Word Flow go.
