Russian Energy Ministry slams new European Union sanctions as unlawful

The Kremlin has censured a recent decision by the European Union to broaden the scope of its anti-Moscow sanctions list over Russia's delivery of Siemens gas turbines to Crimea, saying the provocative move was "against the global law".

The Russian foreign ministry has expressed "deep regret" over Brussels' decision to expand the anti-Russian sanction list.

The EU first introduced sanctions on Russian Federation after the 2014 military takeover of the Black Sea peninsula from Kiev, and stepped them up repeatedly as Moscow then backed separatist unrest in the east of Ukraine.

In June, top Russian officials recently the West to "stop obsessing" over the Crimea, and kept denying Moscow's involvement in the war in Donbass. Earlier sanctions by the European body had barred doing business in Crimea.

The new European Union sanctions against Russia over the delivery of Siemens turbines to Crimea is in direct violation of worldwide law, the Russian Energy Ministry has stated.

The European Council said those sanctioned will be subject to a travel ban and a freeze of assets held in the EU.

The Commission said the move contributed to the establishment of an independent power supply for Crimea and Sevastopol, which "supports their separation from Ukraine, and undermines the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine".

The EU also said the blacklisted companies include Siemens' two Russian contractors that moved the turbines.

"We consider reasons for applying a new portion of restrictive measures against our country absolutely farfetched and reserve the right to retaliatory measures".
