  • Victims of gunmen attack on Catholic Church

The gunmen, witnesses further said, first separated a group of worshipers from the rest and started executing them with gunfire.

Attacks on churches are rare in southern Nigeria, where there is a predominantly Christian population.

Meanwhile, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has said two persons from Ozubulu who are known drug barons in South Africa are the prime suspects of the attack on St Philips Catholic church in Ozubulu.

There were varying accounts of what happened in Ozubulu.

Score of people were killed in the church while other critically injured worshippers died on the way to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.

Several worshippers with gunshot wounds were also receiving treatment at the hospital, the source said.

Police said the shooting was the result of an argument between Nigerians from Ozubulu who were living overseas.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has described Sunday's attack on worshippers in a Catholic church in Anambra state as abominable, barbaric, inhuman, and the height of wickedness.

Local rights activist Emeka Umeagbalasi said his information about the motive largely concurred with that of the police version.

"Today, my heart goes out to Nigeria's Christian community, Gov. Willy Obiano, the people of Anambra and the families of the victims and the survivors of this awful massacre".

Security personnel were said to have cordoned off the area and launch an investigation into the incident.

Expressing his grief in a strongly worded statement issued by the the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, President Buhari said that "there was no justification whatsoever to target Church worshippers and kill them in cold blood".
