French police used gunfire to "neutralize" a man who is believed to have used a auto to ram into a group of soldiers on patrol in a Paris suburb early Wednesday - an attack that injured six people.

Police work near the scene where French soliders were hit and injured by a vehicle in the western Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret, France, on August 9, 2017.

French media reported that the six soldiers were leaving their barracks when they were hit by a BMW.

The driver left the scene in the vehicle and remains on the run, police said.

Police later gave chase to the vehicle on a motorway north of Paris, and shot and wounded the suspect, a man aged in his late 30s who was also arrested, sources involved in the manhunt said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. Embassy in France posted an alert on Twitter early Wednesday, alerting U.S. citizens of "an attack on military personnel" and urging them to "avoid the area".

"Without any doubt, it was a deliberate act", Mr Patrick Balkany, Mayor of Levallois-Perret, told broadcaster BFM TV.

The soldiers targeted in Wednesday's incident were part of Operation Sentinel - a nationwide security operation aimed at "protecting against and dissuading" attacks on French soil.

"The vehicle took off after the incident, which took place at about 8:00 a.m.", France's RFI radio reports.

The attack occurred outside a military barracks 200 metres from the town hall in Levallois-Perret, on the northeastern edge of Paris. He said the auto "accelerated very quickly when they left" the building. Quoting unnamed police officials, however, the AP said a man was arrested at one stop. "It hurtled at them ... it accelerated rapidly". He later told police he wanted to attack a soldier.

He described the attack as a "deliberate aggression".

The anti-terrorism office of the Paris prosecutors' office, which is in charge of investigating similar cases, has opened probe into the incident. She condemned the attack calling it "a cowardly act".
