Opposition lashes Zuma ahead of vote to oust him

  • SA President Zuma faces no confidence secret ballot

"Today's motion of no confidence result is closer than anyone expected", Mmusi Maimane, leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance party said, hailing "brave" ANC lawmakers who voted against Zuma.

A handful of MPs, including Gordhan, have joined calls from anti-apartheid veterans and trade unions for Zuma to resign, as South Africa endures record unemployment and a recession. He has been under fire for numerous allegations of corruption.

The African National Congress has 249 seats in the 400-seat parliament and the opposition controls 151 seats.

The speaker of parliament, Baleka Mbete, had ruled the ballot should be secret, a decision the opposition hoped would embolden ANC members unhappy with Zuma to vote against him.

Demonstrators - for and against Zuma - had gathered outside the Cape Town parliament.

AIADMK removes Dhinakaran as deputy general secretary
All these developments incidentally alarmed the BJP, which instructed both the factions to immediately merge. He asserted that the appointments he made were valid as well and these were in tune with party bye-laws.

"Following the news that Parliament has once again voted to offer President Zuma a lifeline, the risks on the Rand are pointing towards further downward pressure", Ahmad said.

Ahead of the vote, the opposition DA (Democratic Alliance) ran a campaign targeting ANC members who were supposedly unhappy with their leadership.

"We want to remove Duduzane's father because he is the most corrupt individual‚" he said.

South Africa's parliament has convened to vote on a no-confidence motion against South African President Jacob Zuma.

If the ruling African National Congress party, which has the clear majority in parliament, can not agree on a candidate in that time, new national elections would be held.

The Speaker then made it official - Mr Zuma survived the motion 198 to 177, with nine abstentions.

"The ANC rejects this motion with the contempt it deserves", deputy chief whip Doris Dlakude said in reply to Maimane's attack.

"We will see him in court next month - on September 14 & 15, where he will have to defend himself in the Supreme Court of Appeal against the 783 charges of fraud, corruption and racketeering he still faces", he said.

The party has also vowed to continue with its legal action against Zuma, and will be joining the EFF's impeachment proceedings at the Constitutional Court.

The motion fell short of the 201 votes need to oust Zuma. He said this vote was not about political parties, but about the people of South Africa. Let's fight an election for the future of our country, and let's do it now. Zuma's party has bailed him out from at least five previous attempts to remove him.
