US Investigating Diplomats' Hearing Loss in Cuba

  • A member of the Cuban honor guard stands next to a new plaque at the front door of the newly reopened Cuban embassy in Washington. The State Department has expelled two diplomats from Cuba's Embassy in Washington after a series of unexplained incidents

The American diplomats suffered a "variety of physical symptoms" - some so serious that they necessitated a return to the U.S., according to State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert. I'm not going to be able to give you a ton of information about this today, but I'll tell you what we do have that we can provide so far. Some had to go to the U.S. for treatment and one is thought to have become permanently deaf.

After months of investigation, USA officials concluded that the diplomats had been attacked with an advanced sonic weapon that operated outside the range of audible sound and had been deployed either inside or outside their residence, the Associated Press reported. Last year, the outgoing Obama administration reopened the United States embassy in Havana after more than half a century, the most significant in a series of steps toward restoring diplomatic relations between the countries, which collapsed during the Cold War.

Some of the USA diplomats' symptoms were so severe that they were forced to cancel their tours early and return to the United States, officials said.

Wednesday's report suggests the alleged device operated outside the range of audible sound, and was deployed either inside or near the diplomats' residences. It's not clear whether the device was meant as a weapon or if it also served some other goal.

It is something you cannot control but at the moment I am fully committed to doing the best that I can". We missed some targets at the beginning and we're paying for that.

The U.S. officials weren't authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Cuba has never, nor would ever, allow the Cuban territory to be used for any kind of action against accredited diplomats or their families", Cuba's foreign ministry said. It launched an investigation when it became aware of what had happened in February, it added.

According to BBC, it is clear that the two Cuban diplomats left Washington in May.

The U.S. first learned of the issues at the embassy in late 2016, she said.

Disney, North Korea Drive Dow Jones Industrial Average Lower
Disney dropped 5.2 percent as it reported flat third-quarter revenues due in part to weakness in its cable subscription business. Pyongyang said it was examining plans for attacking Guam, a US territory in the Pacific that has a USA military base.

"We have some Americans who choose to come home as a result of that", said Nauert.

According to the Associated Press, five diplomats were affected and CNN's sources claim that at least one will have to wear a hearing aid. The FBI and Diplomatic Security Service are investigating. Through the decades, even when the United States and Cuba did not have formal diplomatic relations, Cuban intelligence agencies specialized in surveilling Americans stationed on, or visiting, the island.

The White House policy reversal was backed by right-wing Republican politicians like Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Mario Diaz-Balart, along with other members of a shrinking Cuban exile community in South Florida that remains bent on overthrowing Cuba's socialist government. Officials cautioned the AP that Cuba may have been unaware the attacks were happening, and that a third country like Russian Federation may have been responsible.
