  • Pence: 'No tolerance' for white supremacists and fringe groups

Trump sent me with a message that should be made clear throughout Latin America: the United States is not going to stand idly by while Venezuela is destroying itself.

"We have no tolerance for hate and violence from white supremacists, neo-Nazis or the KKK", Mr. Pence said at a press conference in Cartagena, Colombia.

If Mike Pence is trying to do damage control following President Trump's stubborn unwillingness to use the words "white supremacist" when very mildly condemning the mayhem that ensued in Charlottesville, Virginia, this weekend, he's doing a piss-poor job of it.

'But the president sent me here to continue to marshal the unprecedented support of countries across Latin America to achieve by peaceable means the restoration of democracy in Venezuela, and we believe it is achievable by those means'. Although Peru had expelled the Venezuelan ambassador just the day before, Peruvian Foreign Minister Ricardo Luna said diplomacy was the only appropriate solution.

More than 120 people have been killed since anti-government protests began in April, driven by outrage over Venezuela's economic crisis and Maduro's creation of a legislative superbody that critics say is dictatorial.

Pence will be in Argentina Tuesday for talks with President Mauricio Macri, and will later stop in Chile and Panama.

The U.S. vice president also highlighted Macri's long-standing business ties and friendship with Trump, praised the Argentine president for his market-friendly economic reform agenda, and called the country an "inspiration" for the region and the world.

He's also working to assure the region that the USA remains engaged despite President Donald Trump's "America First" policy.

"I can't speculate what that is because we haven't been asked to provide any options", Pentagon spokesman Colonel Rob Manning said.

While Pence accurately characterized Unite the Right rally attendees, he followed up by attacking the media for scrutinizing Trump's reluctance to describe his ardent supporters - the "alt-right" who orchestrated Saturday's march - as white nationalists.
