Time Warner Inc.'s HBO reportedly spent around $2 billion previous year on its own shows, and Amazon Prime Video plans to spend $4.5 billion in 2017.

There is no reliable information on how Apple plans to disseminate these shows, though Apple TV - or a new dedicated channel on it - makes the most sense. In their capable hands, the company no doubt hopes to unleash multiple hit movies and TV series that could soon propel Apple firmly into elite status in the streaming video world, and compete with titans like Netflix and Amazon Video. This is about double the budget HBO invests in GOT and other shows annually.

Apple have already made a foray into online streaming services with iMusic, their music streaming subscription service and it looks like they are keen to expand and become the next big Hollywood contender. It debuted reality shows Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke earlier this year, but TechCrunch noted they were not well-received.

Apple, Facebook and other digital and tech giants are increasingly keen to own content as part of wider strategies to control the entertainment supply chain. At Sony, Erlicht and Van Amburg oversaw projects like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and The Crown. That's quite an increase from 2013, at $2.4 billion, and a substantial jump from 2015, when the company spent an estimated $4.9 billion on content. The only person who's come close to topping them is Amazon, but reports claim Apple is gunning for the big chair.
