A tweet written by former U.S. president Barack Obama in the wake of the white supremacist rally in Virginia has become the most liked message ever posted on Twitter. Obama posted the tweet alongside a picture of himself smiling at a group of children of different races.

At the time of writing, the tweet had over 4 million likes and 1.5 million retweets. "For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite".

The August 12 post, Obama's first tweet in three weeks, came after deadly white supremacist violence erupted in Charlottesville, a historic college town, over the weekend. In a statement Saturday, he condemned hatred and bigotry from "many sides", not saying which "sides" he was referring to, or whose hatred and bigotry he was condemning. "There is only one side". Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested that former US President Barack Obama read what Nelson Mandela wrote about the killed Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
