  • Kerala love jihad case: SC directs NIA to probe alleged conversion of Hindu woman

The Supreme Court on Wednesday drew a parallel between the internet-based "Blue Whale challenge" and the alleged indoctrination of young Hindu girls to convert to Islam while brushing aside objection to its decision for a probe by NIA into cases of alleged "love jihad" in Kerala.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said its former judge Justice RV Raveendran, under whose guidance the NIA would probe a controversial case of annulment of marriage, would be paid by the Centre a consolidated fee of Rs one lakh, besides Rs two lakh per day for travelling outside Bengaluru.

Appearing for the NIA, additional solicitor general Maninder Singh had told the bench, "We have arrived at some observations..."

In the last hearing, the apex court had asked the Kerala Police to share all materials related to the case with NIA.

About 600 people are still missing following the disaster that hit the west African nation on August 14. An unofficial morgue toll put the number of deaths from at 400.

Earlier, the Kerala High Court had termed the marriage as "null and void" terming the arrangement as "love Jihad" and ordering the state police to look into such matters.

The alleged conversions had gained the sobriquet of "love jihad" in Kerala and the boy Shafin Jahan moved the apex court for production of his wife Akhila alias Hadiya.

The order came after Kapil Sibal, counsel for the petitioner said the court should decide the matter after speaking to the girl. There are things that can lead people to do anything", CJI Khehar said while rejecting opposition to involving NIA in the case. A bench of the Chandrachud, ordering an inquiry into the matter, before the final decision, told the court that the girl needed the muscle. "Since, the court is directly monitoring the investigation, no one can intervene in it", he said. Jahan had married a Hindu woman in December 2016.

The court cited "Blue Whale" App to point out that somebody could be misguided to take extreme steps. Prima facie it has been found that entities are common in these cases.

"Because if we speak to the girl and she says that she was forcibly converted and married off, the case is over". The woman was known as Hadiya after conversion.

The court also ordered the police to investigate the case.

Senior advocate V Giri, appearing for Kerala government, said the investigation by Crime Branch ordered by the HC was still not complete.
