  • Stoneman will be Alastair Cook's 12th opening partner since Andrew Strauss retirement

Former England captain Alastair Cook hit an unbeaten century weaving a scintillating 248-run stand with captain Joe Root who hit a stylish 136 on the first day of inaugural day/night Test against West Indies at Edgbaston.

By tea on the first day of the historic day-night Test at Edgbaston, with the sun still too high in the sky for the floodlights to have kicked into action, England had marched along to 215 for 2 against an eager but one-dimensional West Indies attack that had already conceded 39 boundaries, nearly three-quarters of England's total.

Root, who made 190 against South Africa in his first match as England captain at Lords last month, pulled off-spinner Roston Chase to fine leg for a ninth boundary that saw him complete his 13th Test century in 139 balls.

That left the West Indies with a tricky nine overs to bat in twilight before the tea interval.

Democrats Introduce Resolution to Censure Trump Over Charlottesville Comments
Late Friday morning, the New York Times was reporting that Trump had told aides he will push Bannon out of the White House. Although Congress has tried to censure many presidents, only a few of those attempts have actually been successful.

Dawid Malan joined Cook and the pair moved through to stumps as the hosts ended day one well on top. Former captain Cook hit 10 fours and current skipper Root struck eight boundaries. Anderson already has a scalp under his belt; removing Kraigg Brathwaite for no score.

Visitors trail by 470 runs when rain calls an early halt to day two of the maiden day-night Test on United Kingdom soil.

But by that stage both Cook and Anderson, England's leading Test run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively, had made telling contributions.

Chase proved the most effective West Indies bowler on day two claiming the wickets of Ben Stokes (10) and Moeen Ali (0) before making Cook (243) his fourth victim which triggered the declaration just before tea.

Jail sentence for Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong
Hong Kong is governed under the "One Country, Two Systems" model, which has allowed it to maintain a high degree of autonomy. A three-judge panel on Thursday made a decision to stiffen those sentences following the justice secretary's request.

But that was as good as it got for Stoneman, brought in after England dropped Keaton Jennings following a run of low scores during the preceding 3-1 home Test series victory against South Africa.

The landmark was reached in a way that rather epitomised the Windies' misery when Cook slashed a single to third man, only for Hope to comically trip over his own feet and allow the ball to trickle to the boundary.

WEST INDIES: K.C. Brathwaite, K.O.A. Powell, K.A. Hope, S.D. Hope, R.L. Chase, J. Blackwood, S.O. Dowrich, J.O. Holder, K.A.J.

Cook, who was replaced as captain this year, showed his vast worth as a batsman alone and had his career-best score of 294 in sight. Westley, still to cement his place at number three, was then lbw on review after missing a drive off first-change Miguel Cummins, with replays showing the ball would have smashed into the middle and leg stumps. Umpire Marais Erasmus was initially unmoved, but three red lights on Ball Tracker prompted him to alter his decision.
