Trump says United States culture, history being 'ripped apart'

"Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our lovely status and monuments", he wrote in a series of tweets. He was referring to Confederate General Jackson, and to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who owned slaves but whose legacy as early presidents is overwhelmingly honored.

But even as Kidd, and Trump, lobby for the monuments to be saved, the descendants of those they honour - including the great-great grandsons of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson -have joined a chorus calling for them to be taken down or relocated.

Just about 200 days into his term, the United States leader crossed a red line in saying there was "blame on both sides" for the melee, which began when a rally by white supremacists over the removal of a Confederate statue turned violent, as they clashed with counter-protesters.

It shouldn't have been surprising that Trump immediately received criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for attributing the violence to "many sides", (a line that ABC News and Politico have since reported was ad-libbed) rather than coming down hard on the neo-Nazis, Klansman and other white supremacists who incited the violence.

Unlike the Confederacy's generals and politicians, for example, Washington and Jefferson didn't take up arms against the United States government and its people.

Heather Heyer, 32, died and 19 others were injured when left-wing violence in this context.

Trump also expressed distaste for removing statues of Confederate commanders in a heated news conference on Tuesday. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., "These were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism". "Thank you all!" Mr Trump tweeted from NY.

Trump blamed the violence on not just the white nationalist rally organizers but the anti-racism counter-protesters, and said there were "very fine people" among both groups.

President Donald Trump decried American "history and culture" being ripped apart after ripping a pair of critical GOP lawmakers in a series of tweets Thursday morning.

The more I think about these monuments stretched across the American South, the more I question whether they should legitimately even be called "Confederate monuments".

Indian railway minister Suresh Prabhu said he instructed officials to rush to the spot. "I am personally monitoring situation". Railways spokesman Anil Saxena said he could not confirm the number of casualties but said at least five carriages derailed.

The monuments, Landrieu said "are not just innocent remembrances of a benign history".

Graham has urged President Trump to heal Americans with his words after she said the President's words suggest "moral equivalency" between the white supremacists and the counter protesters. "But I'll say it right now". "On many sides", Trump said.

"It's the very fact of the plinth - you have to somehow take these people - literally or metaphorically - off their plinths, because it's the elevation of them that is the crucial thing", explained Smith. The president identified those groups Monday, but said again on Tuesday that both sides share equal blame for the violence in Charlottesville.

People can oppose tearing them down for other reasons if they want, but I have yet to hear one that cannot be linked in some way to the South's history of enslaving black people, and therefore aligns with the racist views of the white supremacists who organized the march in Charlottesville.
