  • Danish inventor suspected of killing Swedish journalist aboard submarine says she died in an accident

Wall had been missing since August 11 when she boarded Madsen's homemade submarine.

Copenhagen police spokesman Jens Moller said: "It is clear that the police, like the media and everybody else, is speculating whether this female body is Kim Wall, but it is way too soon to tell".

According to a statement released by police, Mr Madsen told authorities "there was an accident on board the sub that led to the death of Kim Wall and he subsequently buried her at sea in an undefined location of the Koge Bay".

Madsen has been charged with negligent manslaughter and his lawyer Betina Hald Engmark said her client had not admitted guilt.

Kim Wall, a 30-year-old reporter, was aboard Madsen's submarine on assignment when she disappeared more than a week ago.

The court case is being conducted behind closed doors, but Madsen's explanation was released at the request of both defense and prosecution attorneys.

"Copenhagen Police may additionally disclose that the preliminary charge of manslaughter is upheld".

Swedish daily Aftonbladet quoted a letter from Wall's family on Friday "pleading for help from the public" about her whereabouts.

Madsen initially said that Wall had been on the submarine but disembarked the evening prior to the sinking.

"I don't check the background when a journalist calls and asks, 'Can I interview you, '" Madsen said nonchalantly as he entered a police vehicle.

The statement did not identify the submarine's owner, Peter Madsen, 46, but the Danish inventor's financing of the project through crowdfunding and first launch of the UC3 Nautilus in 2008 made headlines.

The submarine sank, thus it was believed that the journalist was murdered and that Madsen sank the submarine on objective in order to cover the tracks.
