  • Nicolas Maduro center arrives for a news conference in Caracas Venezuela Tuesday Aug. 22 2017. Immigration authorities in Colombia announced that Venezuela's ousted chief prosecutor Luisa Ortega Diaz is on her

"Not even if Trump invades Venezuela!” Later - apparently forgetting that he had just mocked Trump - Maduro said he wanted “a relationship of respect” with Trump, a man who over the last two weeks has called Maduro a dictator, hinted at invading Venezuela and included the Venezuelan in the short, short list of heads of state ever sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury as Specially Designated Nationals - comprised of only six Presidents in the last 200 years, two of which are dead".

"Because of that reason, (Maduro's administration) is violating the constitution and law to protect itself".

Varela said President Nicolas Maduro's increasingly authoritarian rule is likely to force more Venezuelans to flee home.

The French news agency reported that Ortega told fellow prosecutors Wednesday that she has received death threats and would hold the Venezuelan government responsible should something happen to her.

Ms Ortega's visit came a day after Mr Maduro claimed that she was working with Washington to damage his administration and said Venezuela would ask for an global arrest warrant for her.

He said on Tuesday that Ortega and Ferrer had committed "serious crimes" and should be apprehended.

Brazil's prosecutor general said in a statement that he had personally invited Ortega, adding to the intrigue surrounding her fate since being fired by Venezuela's socialist president this month and charged with misconduct.

A loyalist of late socialist president Hugo Chavez, Ortega broke ranks with his successor Maduro to become his most high-ranking critic within the government as worldwide pressure on the president mounted. North Korea slams next week's US-South Korea military exercises
That sparked a grim warning by President Donald Trump that Washington could rain " fire and fury " on the North. However, the US and South Korea maintain they are purely defensive.

Amid public speculation about possible United States measures targeting Venezuela's vital oil industry, Maduro said that he has devised a package of measures to "defend ourselves from the trade, petroleum and financial blockade that Donald Trump is going to order".

Maduro told reporters that Ortega, one of his highest-profile Venezuelan critics, had been working with the United States to hurt Caracas' interests for "some time" and said he would ask for Interpol to issue its highest-priority alert.

Maduro has faced months of deadly mass protests by opponents who blame him for an economic crisis and are demanding elections to replace him.

She had previously been dismissed from her post by the controversially elected constitutional assembly, a new body set up by Maduro and tasked with rewriting the constitution.
