  • Vandenberg AFB set to launch satellite aboard SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket

It will see Falcon 9 carry Formosat-5 into a sun-synchronous orbit approximately 600-1000km above the surface of the Earth, where it will be able to best carry out its duties of remote sensing and Earth observation.

The first stage of Falcon 9 was separated at 2 minutes 35 seconds after launch at an altitude of 90 km. The choice to land in the ocean has sparked curiosity among fans after photos suggested that SpaceX's West coast landing zone is complete and all necessary permits and environmental impact reviews have been successfully completed.

But getting Formosat-5 aloft was the main point of today's mission.

Taiwan's first locally built satellite has been launched into space, in what some analysts said could be a boost for the island's surveillance capabilities as well as its efforts to capture a slice of the burgeoning global space technology sector.

At the time of the contract, SpaceX expected to launch Formosat-5 by early 2014. The teams in Taiwan and in the United States congratulated each other excitedly for FORMOSAT-5 launched into space successfully.

The launch also features another landing of the Falcon 9 first stage, in this case on a droneship called "Just Read the Instructions" in the Pacific Ocean.

Original Story: A little over a week after its last launch, SpaceX is back at it with a rocket launch out of Vandenberg, California this afternoon. It also carries an ionospheric science instrument developed by a Taiwanese university. Additionally, SpaceX has finally started reusing the rockets it has recovered, sending two previously flown boosters into space this year.

Moments before the first-stage touchdown the video link to the vessel froze, then reappeared and showed the rocket standing.

FORMOSAT-5 was launched on August 25, 2017 at 2:50 a.m. Taiwan time from Vandenberg Air Force Base by Falcon 9 rocket.
