The Centers for Disease Control is reporting a multi-state outbreak of salmonella infections in humans linked to contact with pet turtles.
According to an advisory note posted on the CDC website Tuesday, 37 Salmonella Agbeni cases were reported in 13 states from the beginning of March this year to August 3.
No deaths have been reported from the outbreak, but 16 people have been hospitalized, according to the agency. Twelve of the people-32 percent-who fell ill are children under age 5. They are the ones most commonly linked to salmonella outbreaks, but any size turtle can carry the salmonella bacteria, even if they look healthy. Nearly half of the 33 people interviewed by the CDC said they had come in contact with a turtle or its environment. It said six people in the current outbreak reported buying turtles from a flea market or street vendor, or getting one as a gift.
The CDC recommends that people avoid purchasing a turtle with a shell length of less than four inches, as smaller turtles have been known to carry the disease.
In 2015 and 2016, more than 200 people were sickened in similar outbreaks linked to small turtles. Fifteen people reported contact with turtles or their environments before becoming ill. A dozen patients are children 5 and younger.
Salmonella infection symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.
Both the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration don't recommend buying turtles or gifting them.
Results of laboratory tests from the 37 patients showed that all of them tested positive for Salmonella Agbeni, a rare strain of salmonella that does not often infect humans. Most people feel better within five to seven days.
