  • DHS Awards Four Contracts for Border Wall Prototypes

Construction of a border wall along the USA border with Mexico was one of Donald Trump's signature campaign issues while running for president.

"These prototypes, which are meant to deter illegal crossings, will help us refine the design standards and security requirements that will meet the needs of U.S Border Patrol", said acting Deputy Commissioner Ron Vitiello during a press briefing on the wall.

Caddell Construction Co. of Montgomery, Alabama, Fisher Sand & Gravel Co. of Tempe, Arizona, Texas Sterling Construction Co., of Houston and W. G. Yates & Sons Construction Company of Philadelphia, Mississippi were selected. Actual construction will begin in about two weeks, and they will have 30 days to complete their prototypes. There were two requests for proposals: a 30-foot high concrete wall design and then any other alternatives. There will be testing of aspects of the walls including aesthetics and anti-climb features.

The CBP plans to announce an additional four more companies selected to build prototypes using materials other than reinforced concrete that could provide see-through capability in the next week.

Smart Takes on Trump's Tax Speech
He told the audience that the countries that have low business tax rates have an advantage over the United States. His big push is for cutting the US corporate tax rate, which he called "the highest in the world".

But long-term funding for a border wall - which could cost $21.6 billion in one Department of Homeland Security estimate, much more according to critics - is still up in the air. More recently, Trump threatened a government shutdown if Congress did not agree to fund the project.

Building a wall along the Mexico border was one of Trump's biggest promises during his campaign, often thrilling his supporters at rallies with chants of "Build That Wall". "The American people voted for immigration control".

"Believe me, if we have to close down our government, we're building that wall", Trump said.

Once those selections are evaluated, authorities will decide which company will build the new border wall, set to run hundreds of miles along the U.S. -Mexico border.

Manafort Probe Heats Up: Mueller Joins Forces With New York Attorney General
Additionally, earlier this summer, FBI agents raided Manafort's home as part of the ongoing Russian Federation investigation. Trump has denied any collusion by his campaign and has condemned the investigation as political witch hunt.

"The prototypes and resulting wall infrastructure will complement the various other tools that we employ to secure our borders", he said.

"This is not a competition to build the rest of the wall", the official said.

Customs and Border Protection had initially planned to award contracts by June 12, with construction beginning by July 21, according to a June Homeland Security Inspector General's report.

CBP also wants to see how well the designs can accommodate the technology that agents say is just as important as the wall when it comes to getting a handle on border security.
