  • Police arrest nurse who refused to draw blood

Alex Wubbels was rushed by an officer, handcuffed and taken into custody at University of Utah hospital in late July after following a hospital policy that police wanted to violate.

Ms Wubbels told Mr Payne that a patient needed to grant permission for blood to be taken in order to determine intoxication or be under arrest, otherwise police require a warrant.

The policy states that blood can not be taken from a patient believed to be "under the influence" for police purposes, unless they have been arrested, a warrant for the procedure has been obtained or the patient has consented.

"Please sir, you're hurting me", Wubbels said.

Thursday's ruling will become final in 15 days if Ayala does not file a motion for a rehearing within that time. That's why I've used my executive authority to reassign almost 30 cases to State Attorney Brad King .

Nurse Alex Wubbels told the Deseret News that she couldn't believe what was happening. When she makes it clear that they won't get the blood, Payne walks aggressively toward Wubbels and says "We're done".

In the video, Payne then grabs Wubbels, pulling her arms behind her back and handcuffing her as other law enforcement members watched. I've done nothing wrong! Why is this happening?

Wubbels has her superior on the phone as she goes through the warrant and claims that it does not match with the criteria to legally execute it at the Utah hospital. "Why is he so angry?" She was working a shift as a charge nurse at University Hospital's Burn Unit on July 26. He added that Payne is still on active duty with the department, but has been suspended from the blood draw program and is the subject of an internal investigation. "I feel a lot of things".

"I'm a health care worker", she said to KSL.

The Salt Lake City police officer who arrested and allegedly assaulted a nurse for refusing a blood draw from an unconscious patient has been placed on administrative leave, the mayor's office said Friday. "You're under arrest, we're going". As for Wubbels, she has not taken legal action against the department just yet, but says she is, however, sharing her story in hopes that it will shine a light on the need for better relationships between medical professionals and police officers.

Police Chief Mike Brown said he was alarmed and sad the incident caused a rift between police and nurses.

Ms Wubbels was left in a hot police auto for 20 minutes, but was not arrested or charged. There were no charges filed against her.
