Woodburn shines for Wales again

  • Watch Gareth Bale try an incredible overhead kick against Austria only for Heinz Lindner to superbly parry the effort away

Back in June, after a battling, Gareth Bale-less, Welsh side earned a hard-fought point in Serbia, the mood was less of celebration and more one of contrition.

Woodburn's impact has helped revive Wales' hopes of a first World Cup appearance since 1958, with Coleman's side now second in Group D.

Asked what the boss said to the players after the game and how they would regroup for the Moldova and Wales double-header next month, Long said: "He was proud of us, the way we performed, we really gave it everything tonight but the over-riding feeling is frustration because getting one point from six [is not good enough]".

Son played the whole match and although he couldn't find the net, the point for his country was enough to guarantee them second place in Group A, which sees them automatically qualify for Russian Federation.

The visitors stepped up their assault in the second half, with Wales manager Chris Coleman sending on 17-year-old Woodburn, who scored the only goal against Austria on his global debut just 261 seconds after coming on as a substitute, on the hour mark.

United States soccer team boosts World Cup hopes by salvaging draw against Honduras
Neither player was fast enough to deal with speedsters Quioto and Alberth Elis , who ran past the American fullbacks repeatedly. Dempsey made his presence felt early, drawing two Honduras yellow cards in the first quarter of the match .

The young Liverpool forward did not get his name on the scoresheet this time but did manage to provide the cross for Robson-Kanu to score the all-important breakthrough goal in the 80th minute.

Aaron Ramsey doubled the Welsh lead in injury time thanks to a deflected effort and in truth it was no more than they deserved given their dominance, and six points from two games for Chris Coleman puts them in a great position to secure a play-off spot in Group D.

It was a scoreline that reflected Wales dominance but nonetheless it was an uninspired performance from a Wales side that enjoyed 72% of possession.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at what we learned from a potentially pivotal night in Dublin.

He picked up the ball on the left flank, ran hard to defeat his opposing defender, and cut a cross with his weaker foot that Robson-Kanu stooped to head home. "You have to show heart and courage and we have shown that".

Additional sanctions on North Korea would be "useless and ineffective": Putin
Russian Federation and the United States have been feuding over the closing of embassies in the two countries. Putin said he reserved the right to remove more American staff from Russian Federation .

Coleman's faith in the boldness of Woodburn's youth paid dividends, and if Austria fancied their chances of pegging Wales back, then they were given short shrift by the team's defensive effort. Still, very exciting for us and everything to play for... we have to be better in our all-round play though.

"When we came in it was start of transition period when John Toshack was bringing through lot of younger players to build for the future".

Klopp expressed his exasperation with the Wales management in March when Woodburn was first called into the senior squad for a World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland.

West Brom striker Robson-Kanu's goal, in particular, was a beauty.

"I had a little chat with him and obviously I wanted to get him on board because we knew he was a great player".
