  • US Students' Scores Inch Up on Latest ACT

This is the first graduating class whose results include scores from the statewide administration of the ACT provided to grade 11 students beginning in 2016.

Despite the increasing number of students taking the ACT, the SAT is still the dominant college-admissions test in Virginia.

39 percent of 2017 graduates met three or four of the Readiness Benchmarks, up from 38 percent in 2016, but down from 40 percent the year before.

Last year, the state's participation in the test surged and the state's scores tumbled.

Sixty-nine percent of Kansas students this year met the English college readiness benchmark, compared to 61 percent nationally. One-half of test-takers in SC and one-third of the test-takers nationally met none of the benchmarks. That's behind the national average of 21.0.

United Nations investigators say Assad carried out sarin gas attack on Khan Sheikhoun
Residents interviewed by the commission and first responders suggested the attack happened during a regular religious gathering. The United States was also cited in the report for what they claim were legal strikes against Al Qaeda militants at a mosque.

The share of Hispanic students in the testing group rose to 17 percent in the class of 2017, up 1 percentage point from a year ago and 3 points since 2013.

According to the report, 60 percent of high school students nationally took the test. The average score for African-American students increased from 18 in 2016 to 18.1 in 2017, and the average score for Hispanic students increased from 20.2 in 2016 to 20.5 in 2017.

Twenty-eight percent of tested 2017 Nebraska graduates met all four benchmarks, compared with 27 percent for the nation.

"The ACT can indicate to us what we need to work on", she said.

Weeks, too, said he was surprised and disappointed that college-readiness scores haven't risen much, given the high priority that policymakers and teachers have been placing on that yardstick in recent years.

AAA: Gas prices up 16.7 percent from previous year
In Texas, two out of the three Port Arthur refineries remained closed and together they refine 1.163 million barrels of oil a day. D'Amelia, speaking from Stewart's corporate offices in Saratoga Springs, acknowledged a 45-cent jump in price is dramatic.

Although college entrance exams may not be the most accurate indicator of a student's preparedness, Woods says they can give some idea of how kids are doing. In comparison, 54 percent of graduates who were not underserved showed strong readiness for college.

Robert A. Schaeffer, the public education director for the National Center for Fair & Open Testing, which opposes high-stakes standardized tests, said in an email that the exam results reflect "more about ACT's marketing wars with the College Board than anything meaningful about high school students".

An ACT analysis looks at the performance of "underserved" students by examining three criteria: whether students are from low-income families, belong to racial-minority groups, or would be the first in their families to attend college.

ACT also reported that many students don't take advantage of the chance to take the exam for free.

Palmetto state students also fell short in meeting the test's College Readiness Benchmarks, scores that represent the level of achievement required for students to have a 50 percent chance of earning a B or higher or about a 75 percent chance of earning a C or higher in corresponding courses.

A tough loss for Tech, but an upbeat outlook all the same
Tennessee is officially 107-59-4 (.630) all-time in night games (those beginning after 6:00pm local time). He ran 44 times for 249 yards and scored five touchdowns, the latter two both school records.

Georgia's overall composite score improved, as did scores in each subject: English, reading, math, and science. All but two public high schools participated and 79 percent of juniors took the test. "We're pleased to see increases in those areas and even more so to have concrete data points to chart adjustments in curriculum and additional focus areas".
