32 dead in massive quake in Mexico

The tremor revived memories of a 1985 natural disaster in Mexico City that killed more than 5,000 people, though initial reports showed Thursday night's quake, which struck in the state of Chiapas bordering Guatemala, didn't cause fatalities at that scale.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said the seismic activity was the strongest quake Mexico has experienced in 100 years.

The quake was felt in Mexico City which is more than 650 miles from the epicenter, with people fleeing apartment buildings. Tremors were felt hundreds of miles away, and reportedly lasted for up to a minute in Mexico City.

Such earthquakes can come with a list of aftereffects, including tsunamis and landslides, according to the USGS, which reported aftershocks registering above magnitude 5.

At least five people have been killed, including two children, in the Mexican state of Tabasco, KCTV5 News reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves of 3.3 feet above the tide level were measured off Salina Cruz. One of the hardest hit areas was Oaxaca, where more than 40 people lost their lives. The town of Juchitán in Oaxaca was one of the worst affected, with at least 17 deaths.

Chiapas Governor Manuel Velasco said hospitals, roads and bridges were damaged and four people died in his state. while TV Azteca showed images of small buildings that collapsed in nearby Oaxaca state.

Mexico's interior ministry said the quake had a magnitude of 8.4, while the US Geological Survey put it at a revised 8.1, up from 8.0 initially.

Mexico's seismologic service however gave a magnitude of 8.4, which if confirmed would be the most powerful ever recorded in this quake-prone country.

Mexico is also facing threat from Hurricane Katia, which is expected to hit its eastern coast.
