  • Russia and USA to build space station in Moon's orbit

Russian Federation and the United States will lead an global coalition to build a space station to orbit the moon sometime in the 2020s, according to multiple reports. "NASA has already engaged industry partners in gateway concept studies".

The Russian space agency added the partners intended "to develop global technical standards which will be used later, in particular, to create a space station in lunar orbit". The new station, which would reside inside the moon's orbit, may eventually replace the aging International Space Station.

Now the global partners will work together to build a miniature space station in lunar orbit - a type of infrastructure that could serve as a steppingstone for future crewed missions to Mars, NASA officials said.

"Statements such as this one signed with Roscosmos show the gateway concept as an enabler to the kind of exploration architecture that is affordable and sustainable", said Robert Lightfoot, NASA's acting administrator, in a press release about the agreement.

Tensions between the governments of the United States and Russian Federation are undeniably high as of late, but that isn't stopping scientists in both countries from pledging to help each other break new scientific ground. He also noted that the new station will unify standards on creating such projects.

While the Deep Space Gateway program is being led by NASA, Roscosmos will contribute docking ports and life support systems, and Russian rockets will be used to help with construction, Engadget reports. The $100 billion ISS, which has been orbiting Earth at about 28,000 kilometres per hour since 1998, is the world's largest space project.
