Porsche obliterates Lamborghini's Nurburgring record with new 911 GT2 RS

  • The fastest Porsche 911 yet GT2 RS takes Ring record

This record was not a one-off: Lars Kern (30) from Germany and Nick Tandy (32) from the United Kingdom broke the previous record for road-approved sports cars (6 minutes, 52.01 seconds) in their first attempt and subsequently finished five laps in under 6 minutes, 50 seconds.

The record lasted just six months.

Head of GT cars at Porsche, Frank-Steffen Walliser talked about the 911 GT2 RS after its run. Nearly a year after Lamborghini dethroned the 918 Spyder as the fastest production vehicle around the Nurburgring Nordschleife with its Huracan Performante, Porsche returned to the famed circuit to reclaim that title.

Siemens and Alstom announce rail merger to form 'European champion'
German industrial group Siemens and French competitor Alstom announced yesterday they've agreed to merge their rail operations. The new company will be listed on the French stock exchange, with 50% of the shares of the new entity to be owned by Siemens.

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has set the fastest time for a lap of the Nürburgring by a rear-wheel drive auto.

The previous record was the 6:52.01 set by the all-wheel-drive Lamborghini Huracán Performante in 2016. He credits the automaker's engineers, mechanics, and drivers for the vehicle being able to beat their benchmark by 17.7 seconds, making the Porsche 911 GT2 RS the most powerful and the fastest 911 to date. Behind the wheel of the two 911 GT2 RS vehicles were Lars Kern from Germany, a Porsche test driver and Nick Tandy from the United Kingdom, a Porsche factory race auto driver. It has a top speed of 211 miles per hour, weighs approximately 3,241 pounds, and can hit 60 miles per hour in 2.7 seconds according to Porsche.

Porsche hasn't said how many 911 GT2 RS' it will make, but surely it will be more than both the McLaren and the Nio.

Ryanair's latest flight cancellations could hit 400000 customers
Ryanair is planning to ground 25 of its aircraft from November 2017 to March 2018 which will result in 30 routes being suspended. It is one of 34 flights which will be grounded from November until March after the company said it would "slow its growth".

Sadly, Porsche is building just 1,000 examples, and they're all sold out.

This makes the GT2 RS a full 10 seconds quicker at the 'Ring than the 918 Spyder supercar, and it makes everything written about the Huracan Performante holding the Nurburgring record suddenly incorrect. The price tag, not that it matters much now, is $294,250.

Hurricane Maria is still churning towards the East Coast
If the storm stays in the wake of José, cooler water will eventually cause it to weaken, the Hurricane Center said. Hurricane-force winds reach 60 miles from the center and tropic-storm-force winds are up 195 miles out.
