  • Man 'ploughs car into pedestrians' before stabbing officer

A man was arrested on Sunday in connection with two "terror" attacks in Canada which saw a several pedestrians hit with a vehicle, and a police officer stabbed in Edmonton, officials said.

This led to a high-speed chase through downtown Edmonton with up to a dozen police vehicles in pursuit, ending with the U-Haul crashing into a crowd.

A 30-year-old man was arrested after the crash; while police are still investigating, they now believe the suspect acted alone in both incidents.

- Suddenly a man driving a white Chevy Malibu at a high rate of speed crashed through the barricade and struck the officer, sending him flying into the air.

Edmonton Police have released a graphic video showing a police officer being struck by a vehicle and then stabbed in what investigators believe to be a terror attack, the CBC reports.

Knecht said it's believed the suspect acted alone, but investigators are not ruling out the possibility others may have been involved.

About midnight, a U-Haul truck was pulled over in the north part of Edmonton, the CBC reports. Actually, the police had stopped this van for security checks, after which the van driver took him towards the city. Knetch could not provide more details about the condition of the pedestrians. Police said he had previously been known to the authorities.

The U-Haul flipped in the downtown core along Jasper Avenue leading to the arrest of the suspect.

'It is believed at this time that these two incidents are related, ' he said.

Police said the suspect, who authorities have not identified, was arrested several hours later following a vehicle chase across a busy downtown street during which he intentionally sought to hit pedestrians.

Goodale's office issued a statement to say the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team was working closely with Edmonton police. Knecht said the attacked officer was not critically injured.

"Terrorism is about creating panic and disrupting people's lives", he said, adding that Edmontonians would "rise above hatred and division".

Knecht addressed those concerns at his news conference, saying the seriousness of the crime dictated why the chase continued.

The incident happened at 8.15pm on Saturday evening in the city of Edmonton, Canada.

The incidents, which occurred late on Saturday night, left one policeman and four civilians injured.
