  • Report: “Let's Make a Deal” host Monty Hall passes away at 96

The affable host who coaxed anxious contestants to choose between the prize in their hand and the mystery prize behind a closed door on the television game show "Let's Make a Deal" died of heart failure, according to his family.

Monty presided over 4,700 episodes of Let's Make a Deal - since he was not only host but also co-creator of the famous game show.

Bob Hilton became host of the show in 1990 with Billy Bush taking over in 2003.

Hall received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1973; and a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs, California, Walk of Stars in 2000.

The game show grew to such popularity it gave rise to a well-known probability riddle that mathematicians dubbed "The Monty Hall Problem".

Born in Canada, Hall earned a college degree in zoology and biology but instead began his career in radio, moving to television in 1960. He was denied entry to medical school, Hall later said, because he was Jewish and faced quotas limiting the admission of minority students. He first tested his skills on radio and, after moving to NY in 1955 and later to Los Angeles, began working on a variety of television shows. Hall would host the popular game show until 1986.

The late TV presenter also created and produced the show, along with Stefan Hatos. In the end, Monty Hall said that he wanted to be remembered for helping people rather than his celebrity status.

Hall was repeatedly honored for his charity efforts, with awards including the Order of Canada, Order of Manitoba and Variety Clubs International's Humanitarian Award. He lost his wife, Marilyn, this past June.

He is survived by his two daughters Sharon Hall, Joanna Gleason and son Richard who have made their own mark in the entertainment industry.
