  • Letters begin to fall off the backdrop as Theresa May delivers keynote speech

Delivering the #keynote speech at the #Tory Party conference in Manchester should have been Prime Minister #Theresa May's opportunity to put things right amid the in-party turmoil that she is facing and the questions raised over her leadership. She said the government wants Brexit negotiations to succeed, but is also preparing for a scenario in which they could fail.

Shapps told the "Today" programme on BBC Radio 4 that the Conservative's often chaotic conference meant that "some colleagues feel it would be better to have that leadership election sooner or rather later".

May had proposed a price cap on the sector earlier this year, the biggest market intervention since privatisation nearly 30 years ago, but the plan was thrown into doubt after her ruling Conservatives lost their parliamentary majority in an election in June.

But the fiasco of her disastrous speech at this week's party conference has placed a great threat to her continued leadership.

Instead, May was first interrupted by prankster Simon Brodkin, also known as Lee Nelson, who handed her a P45 - a form given to those who have been laid off in Britain.

The address had been billed in some quarters as potentially make or break for her premiership following the botched snap election in which the Tories lost their majority.

Shapps, who served as Tory party chairman for three years, says a "growing number" of MPs, including five former cabinet ministers, want May to step down.

Under the headline: 'Theresa May will stay as Prime Minister and get the job done, ' interior minister Amber Rudd wrote in The Telegraph newspaper on Friday that "she should stay".

Speaking on BBC 5 live Mr Shapps said: "We did have a result that was not at all what anyone wanted, least of all what she wanted or anticipated, and. sometimes when things happen you have to take responsibility for them".

Tories fear that ousting May could set in chain a series of events that leads to yet another general election, and they worry that this would risk handing power to the socialist Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

"I wouldn't buy a used vehicle from one embittered colleague - let alone take advice from him about who should be PM", he said. We can do that, and we will under her leadership.
