A predominantly black school in MS named after Confederate president Jefferson Davis is ditching its name and replacing it with Barack Obama's.

Davis IB Elementary School PTA president Janelle Jefferson told the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees at a meeting Tuesday night that the community voted to change the school's name to Barack Obama Magnet IB Elementary School. More than a dozen other schools across the country are named after the former commander-in-chief, mostly educational institutions with a large minority population among its students.

As of January, at least 19 US schools had been named after Obama, according to Education Week.

Mississippi Today reports that Jackson's school board policy requires schools to be named after "persons of good character and prominence who have made outstanding contributions to the school system".

Last month, the episcopal church that Confederate commander Robert E. Lee attended when he was president of Washington and Lee College in Lexington, Virginia even voted to change its name from the Robert E. Lee Memorial Church back to its original title, the Grace Episcopal Church.

"They gravitated to that name when it was proposed by a student", Jefferson said.

The students chose Obama because they were alive during his administration and felt that he shared their principles, Jefferson said.

Board counsel Dorian Turner said the new name will not go into effect until the 2018-19 school year.
