The cheque has been sent.

Trump in an impromptu press conference Monday suggested that he was one of the few presidents that called the families of soldiers killed in action.

Chris Baldridge previously told The Washington Post he appreciated the president's call and was stunned by his generosity.

"I was just floored", said Mr Baldridge, of Zebulon, North Carolina. "I could not believe he was saying that, and I wish I had it recorded because the man did say this", Baldridge told the paper. "He said, 'No other president has ever done something like this, ' but he said, 'I'm going to do it'". At least two never got a call or letter, and another family received no call.

Ms Wilson said: 'Basically he said, "Well, I guess he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt"'. But I was like, "Damn, no cheque".

Chris Baldridge said that he did get a letter from the White House, but no check.

Faced with a scandal, Trump's pick for drug czar quits
But Trump has yet to formally declare the emergency status, which would then unlock additional resources to fight the epidemic. In the wake of the report, some Democratic lawmakers urged Trump to reconsider Marino's nomination.

Wednesday afternoon ― after the Post story had appeared on the newspaper's website ― White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said the check was in the mail.

'It's disgusting that the media is taking something that should be recognised as a generous and honest gesture, made privately by the President, and using it to advance the media's biased agenda'. Obama later described the delay as an oversight.

His accusation that most presidents did not call families of military personnel is provoking a heated response.

He offered no evidence to back up his claim and it was immediately shown to be false.

In 2016, President Barack Obama was prodded into sending a donation by cheque to a foundation set up by the family of slain U.S. hostage Kayla Mueller.

The dispute came as Mr Trump denied being insensitive to a war widow.

Sanders said Trump has reached out to every family that has been authorized by the military office.

But Baldridge hasn't gotten it, which means it may well not have been sent until the Post made inquiries.

Asked if Trump politicized Kelly's son's death, Sanders says, "He was responding to a question and stating a fact".

Ms Wilson said she was in a limousine with the widow of Sergeant La David Johnson, on the way to greet his coffin off the plane, when the phone call happened. "He could have just said, "I'm sorry for your loss" and 'We really appreciate your service and your sacrifice, have a nice day'".

"We were kind of joking about it", she said. Chris Baldridge said he spoke to Trump on the phone after his son, Army Cpl.

He also told reporters to ask Gen. John Kelly about whether former president Barack Obama called him about his son, who died from a landmine in Afghanistan in 2010. Obama had first said he'd make a donation 18 months earlier and in a letter to the family past year said the delay had been a mistake.
