Gen. Mohammad Bagheri focused on bilateral relations in all fields, mainly military cooperation, "which has witnessed a qualitative development during the war that Syria and its allies, mainly Iran, are waging against terrorism" in Syria, SANA reported.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah is one of the main forces backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime in the six-year civil war. "We are in Damascus in order to confirm the solidarity of our partnership in the fight against our common enemies and various challenges", the general noted.

Israeli officials have repeatedly voiced concerns over the growing Iranian presence on its borders and the smuggling of sophisticated weaponry to Hezbollah from Tehran to Lebanon via Syria, stressing that both are red-lines for the Jewish State.

Israel's air force says it has struck arms convoys of the Syrian military and Hezbollah almost 100 times during the war. At the heart of those fears is Hezbollah, which battled Israel to a stalemate in a monthlong war in 2006.

The Russian defense minister arrived in Israel Monday just hours after the Israeli military launched a strike against a Syrian army anti-aircraft battery, after the battery opened fire on Israeli Air Force planes. But the Syrian army said it hit an Israeli warplane after it breached its airspace at the Syria-Lebanon border.

The incident comes as Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was set to meet with officials in Israel.
