Overall, 64 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana, according to the poll, which was taken October 5 to 11.

Sixty-four percent of Americans including 51 percent of Republicans favor legalizing marijuana, according to the results of a Gallup poll released Wednesday - the highest level of public support from either demographic ever recorded. A majority of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents support marijuana reform. The percentage of Gallup respondents who support legalization has climbed consistently since 2012, when 48 percent of those polled said they supported it. "Despite threatening rhetoric from some Trump administration officials, Americans' support for regulating marijuana like alcohol only continues to rise year over year", said Tom Angell, founder of the cannabis advocacy group Marijuana Majority in a statement responding to the poll results. Support increased precipitously in the next decade. "We urge the Department of Justice in particular to continue its policy of not interfering in states with well-regulated adult-use and medical marijuana programs while lawmakers catch up to the will of the people". Eight out of nine marijuana-related ballot measures were approved during the November 2016 election.

A number of states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana at the state level and more than two dozen, including the district, have legalized it for medical purposes. "Over the past several years, Gallup has found that Americans have become more liberal on a variety of social issues".

"Marijuana policy liberalization over the past 20 years has certainly been associated with increased marijuana use; however, policy changes appear to have occurred in response to changing attitudes within states and to have effects on attitudes and behaviors more generally in the U.S." the study stated.

Governor Cuomo signs law banning e-cigarettes in public places
E-cigarettes often contain toxic chemicals in addition to nicotine, something bystanders should not be forced to breathe. As of this week, vaping wherever standard smoking is prohibited will also be banned in NY state.

Among Democrats and Independents, legalization support is now 72% and 67%, respectively.

Legal marijuana now has equal support to gay marriage among Americans, Gallup notes. Sessions could have an uphill battle in shoring up support for his anti-marijuana crusade if he cannot even count on his own party. The majority of state legislatures and governors' seats are controlled by the GOP.
