Niantic announced the new game is called "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite" and it is again going to make use of augmented reality. Per Tech Crunch, it appears as though Niantic is hoping that lightning will strike twice, reportedly developing a similar game based on the popular Harry Potter wizarding world.

Rumors about Niantic developing a Harry Potter game actually surfaced past year, though the developer quickly squashed those rumors. This will be the first global-level game for the Harry Potter phenomenon / entertainment mega-force, and it'll likely pop up in as big a way as Pokemon GO. There's no release date yet, but more information is promised for 2018, so we'll have more news on this new age of Potter gaming as it comes.

Pokémon Go is location-based and lets the player see the world through a digital reality, to locate, capture and battle virtual creatures.

Pokémon Go got its mechanics from the show that inspired it and the console games that came before it, but the Harry Potter books and films don't provide the same simple blueprint.

By what both companies have to say, it seems they are as exciting and passionate about the wizarding world as the millions of Harry Potter fans worldwide. Hopefully there's more to Wizards Unite than a simple visual swap where Pikachu becomes a Griffon.

There aren't any other details to go on just yet, though "Potter" seems like the flawless property for a game like this, with so many characters, spells, and rich wizarding history to draw from.

Unfortunately for Harry Potter fans, details about the app's potential gameplay features are few and far between at the moment.
