Fidget spinners may be popular, and high on many holiday gift lists, but an OR mother and a consumer advocacy group have found high levels of lead in some of the toys, and the defense offered by one retailer might be much help to most parents considering a purchase.

However, the Fidget Wild Premium spinner being sold contains 33,000 parts per million.

Another model, the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner in Brass, tested at 1,300 ppm.

CBS News reports that a Target spokesman said in a written statement that the fidget spinners did not need to meet federal lead limits because they were not marketed as children's toys, but rather general use products.

Lab results showed that two types of fidget spinners contained well over the legal limit for lead, which is 100 parts per million (ppm) in children's products.

CBS News reported Thursday that Tamara Rubin, a Portland, Oregon, mother who runs the Lead-Safe Mama Facebook page, tests products that parents send to her, including lots of fidget spinners.

In the meantime, U.S. PIRG still recommends for adults and children to stop using the fidget spinners.

Target and the company that distributes the spinners, Bulls-i-Toy, both stressed that the spinner is not a toy, and thus doesn't fall under the CPSC rules.

Bulls-I-Toys, the manufacturer of the fidget spinners in question, said in a letter to US PIRG that "there are no mandatory CPSC requirements for it" because the packaging makes it clear that the item should not be used by children of a certain age. "We can't sit idly by while children play with these toxic toys - and yes, these are toys". The product sells for $19.99.
