  • Twitter verification is temporarily on hold

"Verification was meant to authenticate identity and voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance", the company tweeted on Thursday.

Typically, the blue check means that an account "of public interest is authentic" - but the company has withheld it from other high-profile accounts in the past, like with Julian Assange. If you're an individual requesting verification-rather than a company-you'll need to provide a copy of your passport or driver's license for Twitter to check your identity. For critics of Twitter's ongoing failure to effectively address the harassment that occurs on its platform, the move was viewed as yet another example that the social network is not taking the appropriate actions to police its platform.
